Seven Lions, 130 S Michigan Avenue, Chicago 60603
The Loop in Chicago can be a difficult place to find food that doesn’t just feel like an expensive tourist trap. But Seven Lions is central and worth a visit. Situated directly across the road from the Chicago Art Institute, I couldn’t think of a better place to fuel for a morning’s worth of museum strolling. I went for the Eggs Benedict with crab cakes – it was an absolute must. With a side of roasted broccoli it was one of my favourite meals in Chicago.
The Pancake House, 22 E Bellevue Place, Chicago
This is one for the late risers – if you don’t feel like being adventurous (or getting up before 11.00am) you will find that a lot of places in Chicago have already moved on to their lunch menu, but not the Pancake House. And my justification is that it doesn’t even feel like a boring choice for a London girl like me, America should be all about the short stack pancakes, bottomless coffee pots, maple syrup and crispy, crispy bacon. So for the day you have jet lag and can’t face being imaginative, bookmark this as a place to go.
Pain Quotidien, 10 E Delaware Place ,Chicago
We stumbled across Pain Quotidien during a thunderstorm and we huddled inside for hours until it had passed by. Fortunately for us, there was so much to eat on the menu we were able to wile away the time eating and talking. I had the steel-cut oatmeal with berries and agave nectar. After feeling like perhaps I’d been a little too healthy I rewarded myself in the second round of breakfast with a Pain Au Chocolat – the best I’ve had outside of France (what a claim!). Whilst my sister had the soft boiled eggs and I enjoyed them so much I had them myself the next day.
Beatrix, 519 N Clark Street, Chicago
Beatrix is a full on health-lovers destination. A complete juice menu (my favourite is the mango and pineapple nectar) which makes for a great start, and one of the only ways I’m getting anywhere near the 5 a day territory on holiday. As well as warming dishes such as oatmeal, topped with dried sour cherries and almonds. Again feeling too healthy, I followed up with a slice of banana loaf bread and peppermint tea.
