This morning on the Guardian I read that in the last quarter of 2014 McDonald’s profits had dipped 15% on the same time in 2013 and they were asking about the role new burger places – Five Guys, Shake Shack and Smash-burger had to play in Ronald McDonald’s decline. Now we all know how much I love Shake Shack and my visit in New York and I thought it was time to check out the competition.

At Five Guys I ordered the Little Cheeseburger and Little Fries – clearly my health consciousness was kicking in. First impressions were that the staff were so friendly and the food looked mouth-watering. Actual verdict – the burger was cooked well done, cheese was melted all over, salad was crunchy not limp and the primary flavour was patty not bread – all top marks. The chips were a little over salted for my taste but I liked that the skin was still on.

Would I go back? Definitely. Would I pick it over a Shake Shack? Perhaps not. Do I think McDonald’s should be worried? Absolutely.
